Redwood & Western Cedar Deck Joist Span

Table 2’s third species group covers Redwood, Western Cedars, Ponderosa Pine, and Red Pine. Spans are the shortest of the three groups at most cells.

What to expect from this group

At 16″ o.c., Table 2 gives 2x8 = 10'-7", 2x10 = 13'-0", and 2x12 = 15'-1". A Southern Pine 2x8 at the same spacing reaches 11'-10". If your architectural choice is cedar or redwood for appearance, plan beams or tighter spacing when clear spans grow—use the calculator rather than guessing.

AWC notes that Ponderosa and Red Pine design values in this grouping follow northern-species data without incising. Still assume wet service and No. 2 grade as published. Footnotes live on assumptions.

Sister pages: DF-L / Hem-Fir / SPF, Southern Pine, size charts like 2x12 deck joist span.

If you are comparing species only to stretch a fixed 16″ layout, open 2x8 @ 16″ o.c. or 2x10 @ 16″ o.c. for a three-row species comparison without leaving the Table 2 dataset.

FAQ

Can I mix cedar decking on Southern Pine joists?

Yes—species here is about the joist stamp. Decking span is a separate limit; see decking joist span.
