How Many Joists for a 12×12 Deck?
Joist count is geometry. Joist span is Table 2. This page does the count for a 12-foot-wide deck and sends you to AWC-based tools for span—no invented span numbers here.
Simple count formula
Assume joists run the 12′ depth and are spaced across the 12′ width (144 inches). Number of joists ≈ (width inches ÷ spacing inches) + 1, which places a joist on each edge:
| Spacing | Calculation | Joists (edge to edge) |
|---|---|---|
| 12″ o.c. | 144 ÷ 12 + 1 | 13 |
| 16″ o.c. | 144 ÷ 16 + 1 | 10 |
| 24″ o.c. | 144 ÷ 24 + 1 | 7 |
Plans may add a doubled rim/band, stair headers, or blocking that changes the purchase list even when the field count stays the same. Picture framing and diagonal decking can also force tighter spacing than the joist span table alone suggests.
Then check span (do not skip)
A 12×12 footprint usually means about 12′ clear if the beam sits at the outer edge—verify your actual ledger-to-beam distance. Filter Table 2 for combinations that reach 12′ on deck joist size for a 12-foot span, or dial it in with the deck joist span calculator. Popular starting points: 2x8 @ 16″ (Southern Pine 11'-10"—shy of 12′) vs 2x10 @ 16″ (14'-0" Southern Pine).
Spacing primers: 12″, 16″, 24″. Full deck joist span chart on the home page.
FAQ
Does “+1” include the rim joist?
The +1 places joists at both outer layout lines. Whether the rim is a separate vertical band or one of those joists depends on your framing style—follow the plan details.
Why won’t this page quote a single “max span”?
Span depends on species, size, and spacing from AWC DCA 6 Table 2. Counting boards cannot invent that cell.
